Our approach

A safari is not a checklist.

The question

What if a safari wasn't all about racing to tick off a leopard or an elephant… but about moving slowly enough to notice the smallest of things?

That question is really where everything begins.

Because for many people, a safari becomes about trying to see everything in a guaranteed way, and to see it quickly. There's this quiet pressure, even if no one says it out loud. To find. To move. To not miss out.

But when everything moves like that, something else gets lost along the way.

Our focus

At Slow Safaris by Nomad Trails – Sri Lanka, the focus is on something a bit different.

Something quieter, smaller, more human and mindful.

Not in a forced way… just in how the day naturally unfolds when you allow a bit more time and space.

The places

The places we explore shape that feeling too.

Udawalawe is open and wide, known for its wild elephant herds that move through the grass without much hurry. Yala Block 6 is the quietest in terms of crowds. Yala Block 5 feels denser, known for leopard and even sloth bear chances, and is still much less crowded than the famous Yala Block 1, while feeling a little more active compared to the quieter Block 6.

Each place has its own rhythm. And instead of trying to rush through it, the idea is to move with it.

What it means

That's really what a slow safari means.

Not slow for the sake of it… but slow enough to stay with a moment when it feels right.

On wildlife

With respect for that rhythm, nothing is staged, and honestly no wildlife is ever promised.

Sightings are always unpredictable, and that's part of what keeps it real and more rewarding.

But when you take away the pressure to "find something", something else starts to happen.

At first, you still look for the big moments. And they do come sometimes.

But gradually, the smaller things begin to stay with you just as much, if not more. A herd of elephants crossing slowly. A lizard warming itself in the sun. An eagle circling above, almost unnoticed unless you stop.

That kind of noticing comes naturally when you've spent years with a camera inside these parks, learning that the quiet moments are often the most worth waiting for.

The shift

That shift… from searching to simply noticing… is the heart of a slow safari.

It's less about how much you see, and more about how you experience what's already there.

How it works

All safaris are private. Just your group, your pace.

There's no need to follow anyone else's timing or plan. Most experiences are personally guided, and time spent inside these parks quietly shapes how each safari unfolds.

The park

And in the end, the rest is left to the park.

It reveals itself in its own way, in its own time.

You just have to be there long enough to notice it.

If this feels like the kind of experience you are looking for, and you feel we are a good fit for you, you can explore the safaris below. It would be our pleasure to host you.

Yala Block 5 & 6

The quieter side of Yala. Fewer vehicles, denser forest, and some of the highest leopard densities in the world. For those who want something off the beaten path.

"We sat with that family for forty minutes. Nobody said a word."

We had been tracking a herd since 6am, twelve elephants moving slowly through the tall grass towards the reservoir. When they reached the water, they stopped. The matriarch waded in first, and the calves followed, bumping into each other, splashing. The whole vehicle went quiet.

That's the thing nobody tells you about a safari. The best moments aren't dramatic. They're the ones where you hold your breath without realising it, and time goes a little soft.

This is why we move slowly. Rushing past this scene would have cost us everything.
