Safari the way
it was meant to feel.

Small groups. Ethical. Slow pace. Real moments in the wild.

Our approach

A safari is not a checklist.

The question

What if a safari wasn't all about racing to tick off a leopard or an elephant… but about moving slowly enough to notice the smallest of things?

That question is really where everything begins.

Because for many people, a safari becomes about trying to see everything in a guaranteed way, and to see it quickly. There's this quiet pressure, even if no one says it out loud. To find. To move. To not miss out.

But when everything moves like that, something else gets lost along the way.

Our focus

At Slow Safaris by Nomad Trails – Sri Lanka, the focus is on something a bit different.

Something quieter, smaller, more human and mindful.

Not in a forced way… just in how the day naturally unfolds when you allow a bit more time and space.

The places

The places we explore shape that feeling too.

Udawalawe is open and wide, known for its wild elephant herds that move through the grass without much hurry. Yala Block 6 is the quietest in terms of crowds. Yala Block 5 feels denser, known for leopard and even sloth bear chances, and is still much less crowded than the famous Yala Block 1, while feeling a little more active compared to the quieter Block 6.

Each place has its own rhythm. And instead of trying to rush through it, the idea is to move with it.

What it means

That's really what a slow safari means.

Not slow for the sake of it… but slow enough to stay with a moment when it feels right.

On wildlife

With respect for that rhythm, nothing is staged, and honestly no wildlife is ever promised.

Sightings are always unpredictable, and that's part of what keeps it real and more rewarding.

But when you take away the pressure to "find something", something else starts to happen.

At first, you still look for the big moments. And they do come sometimes.

But gradually, the smaller things begin to stay with you just as much, if not more. A herd of elephants crossing slowly. A lizard warming itself in the sun. An eagle circling above, almost unnoticed unless you stop.

That kind of noticing comes naturally when you've spent years with a camera inside these parks, learning that the quiet moments are often the most worth waiting for.

The shift

That shift… from searching to simply noticing… is the heart of a slow safari.

It's less about how much you see, and more about how you experience what's already there.

How it works

All safaris are private. Just your group, your pace.

There's no need to follow anyone else's timing or plan. Most experiences are personally guided, and time spent inside these parks quietly shapes how each safari unfolds.

The park

And in the end, the rest is left to the park.

It reveals itself in its own way, in its own time.

You just have to be there long enough to notice it.

If this feels like the kind of experience you are looking for, and you feel we are a good fit for you, you can explore the safaris below. It would be our pleasure to host you.

What makes us different

The difference between a safari and a slow safari.

In Sri Lanka

Most safaris in Sri Lanka are done with a safari driver rather than a separate guide sitting inside the jeep with you. That is completely normal here, and it works well. Many drivers spend years inside the national parks almost every single day, so over time they become genuinely skilled at spotting wildlife, reading animal behaviour, and knowing the parks in a way that only comes from real experience. Many guests are completely happy with this setup, and it is also one of the reasons why safaris here are far more affordable compared to Africa.

The difference

That said, being a very experienced safari driver and being a dedicated personal guide are still two different things. The driver sits in the front compartment while guests are seated at the back, so conversation during the drive naturally becomes more limited. It can be a little harder to explain animal behaviour, birdlife, or what is actually unfolding around you when there is that physical separation. And not every driver speaks strong English, even if they are wonderful at finding wildlife.

At Nomad Trails

Most safaris at Nomad Trails are personally guided by Prasanna. He sits with you inside the jeep for the whole safari, not just to help spot animals but to explain what is happening, share what he notices, and slow things down when a moment feels worth staying for a little longer. For many guests, that closeness and conversation turns out to be one of the most memorable parts of the day.

That said, it does depend on the package and Prasanna's availability. The Starter Safari runs with one of the experienced drivers who work with Nomad Trails. Signature and Full Day safaris are personally guided by Prasanna, subject to his schedule. If that matters to you, please do ask before confirming. He replies personally and is always happy to be open about what to expect.

What guests say

Honest words from people who were there

★★★★★

"Prasanna and Uncle Ajith don't just drive you around hoping to spot animals – they know this place intimately. They slow down, explain behaviors, point out the smallest details, and make sure you feel the magic rather than just ticking boxes. Their passion is contagious; you can see it in the way they talk quietly about the elephants as if they're old friends. Herds of elephants – dozens of them, including playful calves and tiny babies stumbling after their mothers – came within meters of the jeep. Crocodiles, water buffalo, and birds everywhere. Prasanna's birding knowledge is outstanding. They even surprised us with a delicious Sri Lankan breakfast on a quiet lakeshore while elephants grazed in the background. It felt like a dream. Prasanna and Uncle Ajith didn't just give us a safari – they gave us memories that will stay with us forever and a deeper appreciation for this beautiful corner of the world."

"We had the most wonderful safari experience thanks to Prasanna. Since we wanted to be away from the crowds, he suggested Yala Block 5&6, which was a great idea. We saw so many animals in their natural environment and since it was so quiet and peaceful, we did not feel like intruders, but rather as respectful bystanders. Prasanna has extensive knowledge of all the species inhabiting the national park which he is happy to share, and takes beautiful photos of animal encounters. If you want to support the concept of slow and ethical safari, Prasanna is the right person to be your guide. We really appreciate all the info he provided prior and during the safari, his kindness and sense of humour. And his mum prepares amazing picnic food!"

"We absolutely loved the idea of a slow, ethical safari away from the crowds. Prasanna responded almost immediately, answered our questions and provided detailed information about different safari options. The day before our safari we received a message with extra questions about our preferences to make it a successful trip. It really was a perfect day! Prasanna is very kind, friendly and it's very clear he wants you to have the best safari experience, not just because it's his job, but because he is passionate about wildlife and wants to share that passion. Delicious breakfast and lunch, hours of driving through the park, most of the time with no other jeeps in sight. We wish we could do it again someday."

"A fantastic and thoughtful safari! We saw so many elephants and baby elephants (as well as monkeys, birds, crocs, peacocks and buffalos) in a kind and respectful manner, with a very knowledgeable tour guide. My 5 year old daughter was spoilt with local gifts and snacks, best of all entertained with games of rock / paper / scissors! A beautiful lunch included! Highly recommend!!!"

"Our safari with Prasanna was brilliant. He really took time to understand what we wanted from the day, and matched that with excellent knowledge of the park and nature. His detailed knowledge meant he brought us to places we could see animals close up but without causing them any stress. We saw many elephants including family groups and babies, plus crocodiles, deer, monkeys, many birds and mongoose. We were able to take our time and peacefully watch the animals going about their business which was magical. If you are looking for a personalised experience where you aren't going to feel like part of a crowd chasing wildlife, Prasanna is a great choice and we'd definitely recommend him."

"Our safari at Yala was the absolute highlight of my three week trip to Sri Lanka! I chose Prasanna as our guide because from the first message, I knew he really cared about not only our experience, but the animals too, which was really important for me. He was very informative before and during the safari, bringing a book and binoculars for us! We had an incredible breakfast part way through and couldn't have asked for a better experience. We saw multiple elephants, golden jackals, dozens of new bird species and lots of big crocodiles. Prasanna and the driver spotted animals we never would've seen by ourselves and made sure we had plenty of time to just watch them as they played, ate or enjoyed each others company. It was absolutely perfect and well worth the very early wake up call!"
