Yala Block 5 & 6 Safari

Leopard territory. The world's highest leopard density, dense scrub forest, and almost no other vehicles. The quieter, more honest side of Yala.

About the park

Leopard country. Dense forest. The quieter side of Yala.

Most people who visit Yala never make it to Block 5 or 6. They go to Block 1 — the famous one, the crowded one — and come back with photos of leopards taken from a crush of thirty jeeps. Block 5 and 6 are different. Remote, dense, genuinely wild. The roads are rougher, the vegetation is thicker, and on a good morning you might share a sighting with two or three other vehicles instead of two hundred.

The wildlife here is the same as Block 1 — leopards, elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, water buffalo, and a remarkable range of birds — but the experience of being among it is completely different. Quieter. More patient. The kind of safari you remember not because of what you saw, but because of how it felt.

Honest note: Leopard sightings in Block 5 & 6 are possible and genuinely likely — these blocks have the highest leopard density of any national park in the world. But no sighting is ever guaranteed. What we can promise is the best possible odds, with the fewest crowds. That's the honest deal.

When to come

The light at 6am makes everything worth it.

The dry season runs from May to September, and this is when Yala Block 5 & 6 are at their best. Lower vegetation means leopards are more visible, waterholes draw animals in, and the light in the early morning is genuinely extraordinary. That said, Yala is accessible year-round — the park does not close between seasons the way some do.

The monsoon months bring a different kind of beauty. The forest turns deep green, birds are incredibly active, and the crowds thin out completely. If you don't mind some rain and you're flexible about what you might see, the shoulder months offer a quieter, more personal version of the park.

Peak season: May to September — dry, lower grass, leopards more visible, best sightings

Shoulder: October to November, January — quieter, lush green, still excellent wildlife

Ask us first: December through January can bring heavy rains some years. Conditions vary — always check with us before booking.

Common questions

Things people usually ask about Yala

Yes — dramatically different. Block 1 can have 200 or more jeeps converging on a single leopard sighting. Block 5 & 6 might have three to five vehicles on a good day. The experience is completely different: quieter, slower, more personal. If you've heard stories about Yala feeling like a zoo, those stories are about Block 1. Block 5 & 6 are a different park entirely.
Honestly, good — but not guaranteed. Block 5 & 6 have the highest leopard density of any national park in the world. If you spend six hours here across one or two days, the odds are genuinely in your favour. But wildlife is wild. It doesn't perform on schedule. What we offer is the right conditions and the patience to make the most of them.
Yes, and many of our guests do exactly that. The two parks are about 2.5 hours apart by road. Udawalawe for elephants and open grassland, Yala for leopards and dense forest — they complement each other well. Message us and we'll help you build a combined itinerary around your dates.
Sloth bears are present in Block 5 & 6 — rare to see, but possible. Elephants and water buffalo are common. Crocodiles are frequent near water. Jackals are often spotted in the early morning. And the bird life here is exceptional — painted storks, bee-eaters, kingfishers, and a long list of raptors. Even if you don't see a leopard, you will not leave disappointed.
During peak season (June to September), permits and availability fill quickly — we recommend getting in touch at least 3 to 5 days before your intended date. Outside peak season we can sometimes accommodate shorter notice. Just message us and we'll tell you honestly what's possible.
Yes — considerably rougher than Block 1. Our open-roof 4WD jeep handles it fine, but the tracks are unpaved and uneven in places. Expect some bouncing, especially after rain. Wear comfortable, fitted clothing and secure any loose bags. It's part of what makes it feel remote — but it's worth knowing in advance.
